BALSAM FIR

ABIES BALSAMEA

Balsam Fir has long been a preferred species for many because of its strong Christmas tree scent. A beautiful choice, this evergreen’s two-toned needles are dark green on top and silver underneath and like many firs, they’re likely to retain their needles for four weeks with proper care.

However, when it comes time to decorate, be aware that these trees have soft, flexible branches making them not the best choice for heavier ornaments.

FRASER FIR

ABIES FRASERI

Considered to be the perfect holiday tree, you probably won't have to look long when searching for a Fraser Fir as this varietal tends to grow in near-perfect triangles! With attractive one-inch needles that are silvery-green and soft to the touch, it’s the ideal varietal for families with pets or young children who tend to be more hands on. Fraser Fir trees also have a bit of space between their layers of firm, hearty branches, allowing you to showcase all of your favourite ornaments and has excellent needle retention.

WHITE SPRUCE

PICEA GLAUCA

A popular Christmas tree choice, the White Spruce have short, stiff needles that are ½ – ¾ in. long and have a blunt tip, making them an excellent choice for ornaments. Bluish-green to green in colour, they have great foliage colour and a good, natural shape. Plus, the needle retention is better in a White Spruce than in other spruce varietals.

NORWAY SPRUCE

PICEA ABIES

The Norway Spruce has earned itself the nickname the holiday spruce and, while widely available in much of Canada, is actually a varietal that's native to Europe. While it boasts beautiful, firm branches, the Norway Spruce needs to be watered consistently to retain its needles.
